What Can You Do to Support Your Enamel Health?

enamel health; tooth enamelScientists are in the process of figuring out how to re-grow tooth enamel, but at the moment, once it’s gone, it isn’t coming back. You need to take good care of your oral health if you want to keep this protective layer over your teeth.

But how can you take care of your enamel health between visits to your local dentist? Let’s talk about it. Read on to learn a few ways that you can protect your enamel at home.

Avoid Excess Sugar and Acidic Foods

It’s no secret that sugar isn’t good for your teeth. When sugar combines with the bacteria that already exist in your mouth, it forms an acid that can break down your tooth enamel.

While the occasional sugary treat is no big deal, frequent or prolonged exposure can lead to a complete enamel breakdown.

The same is true for acidic foods, even healthy ones like citrus fruits. That natural acid can also cause your enamel to break down.

This isn’t to say that you can’t ever have these foods. When you eat or drink foods with sugar or acid, do so around the same time you plan to brush your teeth.

It’s also best to eat or drink these things quickly. It’s better to eat one chocolate bar than it is to sip a sugary soda all day long because of how much exposure your teeth will have to the sugar.

Brush at Least Twice Per Day

Did you know that after eating acidic foods, it’s actually better to wait about a half-hour before brushing? You don’t want to brush softened enamel right away.

Still, you should brush your teeth at least twice daily to remove any lurking bacteria. Brush your teeth for at least two minutes, and don’t forget to brush your tongue.

Believe it or not, you can over-brush your teeth, especially if you’re using certain types of toothpaste with abrasive ingredients. Talk to your friendly neighborhood dentist about the best types of toothpaste for your enamel.

Drink Plenty of Water

When you drink water, you’re diluting the acids that cause harm to your teeth. You’ll wash away bacteria, residue, and lingering food even if it isn’t time to brush yet.

Drinking water isn’t an alternative to brushing your teeth, but it will make a big difference between brushes.

Chew Sugar-Free Gum

Believe it or not, chewing sugar-free gum with xylitol might be good for your teeth! Xylitol can neutralize the acids that would otherwise weaken your enamel.

Sugar-free gum will also cause you to produce more saliva, clearing out more harmful bacteria.

Chew sugar-free gum guilt-free!
